Buying an HDTV, What You Need To Know

It’s about time! HDTVs are finally affordable! The sheer variety of high definition televisions makes choosing one somewhat perplexing; however, you simply need to decide what your requirements are and then decide amongst the choices that fit your criteria.

It is good to know a little bit about the different features and options of HDTVs before you start shopping. After all, you don’t want to regret your purchase, thinking that you could have had more things included that you really wanted in the first place.

Here are the most important:

• If you do not have high definition channels or a subscription to them, regular digital channels may not look as crisp. Along with your high definition TV, you should consider a satellite dish or high definition channels.

• It is possible to tune into free high definition channels if your HDTV has a built in tuner feature.

• Make sure there are enough connections for your various components so you won’t have to swap out the connections if you want to switch viewing options between DVD and Satellite or cable.

• You may want an HDTV that has options to switch the viewing screen to widescreen, letterbox or regular, depending on if you are viewing a movie or just watching something on cable or satellite.

• Sound options – do you need full surround options or do you already have a home theatre set up? Some HDTVs come with Dolby surround sound, while others have a surround sound set up.

• How many pixels would you like? There are options including 720p, 1080i and 1080p. This represents the number of vertical pixels and horizontal pixels that refresh to give you a clear picture.

• Decide whether you want flat panel, projection or cathode ray tube style. Each has pros and cons, but it depends mostly on what you need the TV for. For example, if you have a large family room that is set up with full surround sound, you may want to purchase a projection HDTV. The main drawbacks to this selection is the price (very expensive) and the regular required maintenance and adjustments.

• Size – the options are endless – from 13 inches right up to 84 inches. Again, the depends on your budget and your requirements.

• Features – does it come with a universal remote? Can you fully adjust sound, picture, etc. to your tastes?
